FAQ

1)What is a segway? How does it work?

The Segway Human Transporter (HT) is the first self-balancing, electric-powered transportation device. With dimensions no larger than the average adult body and the ability to emulate human balance, the Segway HT uses the same space as a pedestrian, and can go wherever a person can walk. The Segway HT allows people at home and at work to go farther, move more quickly, and increase the amount they can carry anywhere they currently walk. 2) Is a Segway difficult to ride?

Not at all. The Segway is designed to deliver a maximum of responsiveness with a minimum of effort. Each of our tours starts off with a comprehensive training course that will teach you the basics of Segway handling. So, while the Segways effortless glide might be a little disconcerting at first, by the time you finnish the tour you'll be a pro. Ready to buy your own and head out!

3) Are the Segways available for rent?

Unfotunately, Milwaukee city ordinance does not allow Segways on non private property with the exception of a guided tour. We do offer "The Zone" for those individuals who do not want to go on a tour.

4) How long will the batteries last? What is the maximum speed we can move at?

Our Segways are equipped with Nickle Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries good for about 12 miles on a full charge. New model Segways now come equipped with Lithium-Ion batteries that will get you twice that far. Average charge time is roughly 6 hours, but with the built in charge management package, you can just plug it in and forget it. No memory developing, no overcharging, just a simple wall outlet is all you need.

5) Are Segways safe to ride?

In a word, yes! The machines five internal gyroscopes will keep the platform level despite a riders best effort to flip it. The platforms weight sensors take readings 100 times per second to ensure responsive starts and (sometimes more importantly) stops. To further guard your safety we require all of our riders to wear a helmet while on the Segway, just in case. With several other programming safety features built right in, the Segway provides one of the safest, most enjoyable ways to experience all that Milwaukee has to offer

6) Are reservations required?

Though we do accept walk-ins, we do ask you to call ahead. The only way we can guarantee you a time slot is if you call ahead. Tour times start daily at 10:00a.m. Please call if you need to cancel or if you are running late.  Our number is 414.273.1343.

7) How long will the tours last?

Our tours will range between one and a half hours  to two hour, depending on group size and how confident riders are during training. Certainly not long enough to see everything in the milwaukee lakefront, so you'll just have to come back again.

8) Where on the lakefront do your tours run?

Our tours start at our bike rental in Veterans park.  From there we have a few different paths to take.

9) Are tours ever cancelled?

As we are in Wisconsin, heavy rainstorms do tend to crop up now and again. Short of these torrential downpours, not much else will stop us. If we need to cancel a tour, we will call as far in advance as possible.

10) How old do you need to be to ride? What if I have a disability?

Too little weight can cause handling problems as the gyro sensors are in the standing platform. Due to this, we require all riders to weigh at least 100 lbs. Children must be at least 16. Please make inquiries at time of reservation. Disabilities can be a problem, but as long as you can mount and dismount (a step of about five inches), and if you can stand for about an hour at a time, you should have no problem on our tours.

11) How do I find Milwaukee Lakefront Segway?

We are conveniently located at Veterans Park in Milwaukee, right next to our sister store, Milwaukee Bike & Skate Rental.

12) Do you handle private parties and group events?

We most certainly do. Any booking will come complete with up to five Segways, helpful and friendly staff trainers, cones for courses, the works. To add a bit of flare to your little get together, call 414.273.1343. Prices to be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
